About Myself

My name is Moin Uddin Ahmed. I have completed my PhD in Health Economics from Translational Health Research Institute at Western Sydney University, Australia. My doctoral research was focused on the cost aspect of diabetes-related foot disease in New South Wales for my PhD thesis. For this purpose, I used the 45 and Up Study data linked with NSW admitted patient data collection (APDC), emergency department data collection (EDDC), Medical Benefits Schedule (MBS), Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS), Australian Bureau of Statistics Cause of Death (COD), NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages (RBDM) data.

Currently, I am working as a Senior Health Economist at the University of Sydney. Since joining, I have been working on the quality assessment of existing economic evidence and developing health systems and economic models to inform decision-making about effective, cost-effective, and equitable access to health care for people with eating disorders. Prior to the role at the University of Sydney, I worked as a Lecturer of Economics at the Institute of Health Economics, the University of Dhaka, from 2013 to 2020. Besides this, I worked as a research associate and independent consultant for a project based at Harvard Kennedy School with Professor Rohini Pande and Mahnaz Islam. I also worked as a research associate and system analyst with other members of the Institute of Health Economics for the project “Analysis of Investment Case, Use of Pool Fund and Current Local Level Planning for Improvement of Maternal and Child Health Care in Bangladesh” Moreover, I along with my co-researchers managed to have grants for several projects from IUCN, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, OXFAM etc. I am efficient in operating statistical tools like STATA, R, TreeAge, and LATEX, along with the Microsoft Office package. I am also an expert in MBB (Marginal Budgeting for Bottleneck) tool, and I have used it successfully in the analysis of investment case for improving maternal, neonatal and child health services in the Chittagong and Sylhet districts of Bangladesh.

I, along with his co-researchers, managed to have grants for several projects from international organisations. I have published thirteen articles in peer-reviewed journals and contributed to numerous research reports. My research has attracted a multidisciplinary audience, including academics in economics, social sciences, public health, and medicine. I have published in some of the well-regarded journals in these fields, including Psychological Medicine, Nicotine and Tobacco Research, International Wound Journal, Journal of Foot and Ankle Research, Frontiers in Nutrition, BMJ Open, among others. I have also presented his research findings at several national and international conferences. I have also been invited as a speaker in a few forums and conferences.

Career objectives

Studying Economics and conducting research are my prime objectives in life, and I want to develop myself as a competent academician in Health Economics research. The career path that I have chosen is a never-ending learning journey, but I never had a lassitude in learning and exploring new things. I am confident that my passion and patience for doing research, strong quantitative background along with a good foundation in using different statistical software, ability to publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, carrying out research independently and jointly, experience in writing proposals and acquiring grants for projects will make me a competent candidate.

I have chosen to be an academician and researcher in the field of Health Economics. Achieving this goal requires an in-depth understanding of the subject matter as well as rigorous research experience. Doctoral training enables understanding the fundamental concepts through graduate courses as well as knowledge enhancement through research engagement. Doctoral research will enable me to become an independent researcher on the desired track. Gaining expertise in new tools/theories will not only broaden my knowledge base but also further my inquisitiveness in understanding the basis of economic development. I understand that I have never-ending learning in my chosen career path, but I never had lassitude in learning and exploring new things. The PhD study at Western Sydney University will put me one step forward in my course of life.

In the process of achieving my goal, I am carrying out several activities both as PhD candidate and research associate at my current institution. I am looking forward to publishing papers in high-impact journals and presenting these at international conferences. I am attending seminars on different Economics and health issues, which is broadening my knowledge. By combining rigorous academic training with a dynamic social network, I hope to acquire both the fundamental and advanced tools needed to be a better professional in my desired professional track.

In order to be a successful academic person and researcher, I am committed to meeting the objectives of the relevant stakeholders, which is aligned with my career goals. I have completed different stages required for my PhD studies until this point which are appreciated by my supervisors. I am involved in different activities, such as coordinating Stata workshops, at my Institute to show my dedication to the University. I am also maintaining good communications with my industry partner, that is my scholarship provider, by attending different workshops, seminars, symposiums and meetings, as well as updating me about my progress. The research that I am currently undertaking has some common goals for both myself and my stakeholders. It is the research outcome and its output that is beneficial for myself, my co-authors, my university and my industry partner in both the short and long run. I am also concerned about the impact it makes on society besides the academic contribution because it gives me pleasure to see that my research has the potential for an impact on the community.

Research

My researches are focused on the issues of Health Economics, Big Health Linked Data, Applied Econometrics, and Public Health. I have a keen interest in the economic evaluation of different interventions in the healthcare sector.
